Landed at Hamad International just after midnight and the handover took less time than the walk in from the gate. The car was clean and the fuel gauge matched the paperwork.

Driving between the West Bay towers is easy enough, finding the right underground entrance twice in one evening rather less so. The rental itself was straightforward and the price at the counter was the price I booked.

We parked up for the afternoon and walked the whole Msheireb quarter on foot, which is really the only sensible way to see it. Pick up and drop off were both quick.

The run down to Al Wakrah takes barely half an hour and the road is in better condition than anything I drive at home. Booked a small automatic and never once wished for something bigger.

In July the car park turns the inside of any car into an oven, so give it five minutes with the doors open before you load the children in. Nothing wrong with the booking, the air conditioning just needed a head start.

I drive the Corniche most evenings now, and having my own car instead of waiting on a taxi changed how much of this city I actually see.
